A reckless mistake from the on-field umpires resulted in Ben Laughlin bowling seven legitimate deliveries in one over in yesterday’s game between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals. The incident took place in the 12th over of the SRH’s chase but no major controversy has erupted.

In the fourth game of the IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad demolished Rajasthan Royals as they chased down an under-par 126 with 9 wickets in hand and 25 balls to spare. Shikhar Dhawan was the star with the bat as he struck a fine 77 after the SRH bowlers had set up the win.

Everything seemed normal but there was one incident which raised many eyebrows. In the 12th over of Hyderabad’s innings, Ben Laughlin came on to bowl his second over. He bowled an over with 7 legitimate deliveries and the umpires did not notice the error as they had lost count of the number of deliveries bowled.

However, no major controversy broke out as the game was one-sided. But had it been a close game, there might have been a different reaction to this error.

The incident took place at a time when SRH were in total control (they were 103/1 when the extra ball was bowled). Laughlin had given away 7 runs off the first six balls with Dhawan cracking a boundary of the 6th ball and conceded a single off his 7th delivery. It was a bizarre error made by the umpires as there were no wides or no balls bowled in that over and yet 7 balls were bowled.
