Former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer has stated that team India’s dismal batting performance at Lord’s in the second Test match against England was worse than the 42 all out back in 1974 at the same venue. He also added that the current Indian batsmen are getting the basics wrong.

With conditions not in favour of the visitors, England took full advantage of the swinging and seaming conditions at Lord’s in the second Test match. None of the Indian batsmen were able to tackle the quality bowling performance displayed by the home team. Eventually, the visitors had to pack their bags after losing the match by an innings and 159 runs. People started comparing this performance with the one in 1974 at Lord’s where the Indian team in their second innings, was all out for 42, which till date remains the lowest total for India in Test cricket.

Engineer, who top-scored for India in that 1974 Test match with an 86 in the first innings, felt that the performance displayed by Virat Kohli and his men was worse than the one 44 years back.

“I remember we were all out for 42, but this performance has been much worse. We at least put up a fight in the first innings of that Test and I was the top-scorer as well,” Engineer said.

The former wicket-keeper batsman further stated that the current Indian team, barring Virat Kohli, lacks the basic technique to survive against a decent pace attack in English conditions. He felt that these batsmen were playing the balls against the swing, which was technically wrong.

“I feel that apart from Kohli, the rest of the Indian batsmen lack the basic technique to survive a decent pack attack in English conditions. I love these boys, but their technique leaves a lot to be desired. It’s a basic, you do not play across the line against the swinging ball. I don’t know what the batting coaches are doing,” he added.

Engineer was at Lord’s on Sunday and he spoke about his discussion with Clive Llyod, the legendary West Indian captain, about the Indian team’s lack of application.

“He (Clive Llyod) told me that the Indian batsmen are getting the basics wrong which is the worst part,” Engineer said.
