India vs Australia | Sunil Gavaskar calls for change in management if India lose series
Sunil Gavaskar has stated that if the Indian team goes on to lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under, then the change should begin from the top, hinting at the coach and captain of the Indian team. The Indian team has already lost two away tours earlier this year in South Africa and England.
After India lost the second Test match in Perth by 146 runs, Gavaskar has been at the forefront of the Indian team’s criticism. Now, the former India opener has come out all guns blazing, stating that if Virat Kohli and company
“We will know that [the difference between Kohli as captain and batsman] as we go forward. The Australia series is a good opportunity. If India doesn’t win the Test series, then we need to think what needs to change, change from the top. If we win, then it’s a different case, altogether,” Gavaskar said at Agenda Aaj Tak in New Delhi.
Last year, after putting a good show all throughout the ICC Champions Trophy Tournament, the Indian team had lost the final in a one-sided match against archrivals Pakistan. Gavaskar went out to point out that it was a bad choice at the toss by the Indian skipper then, which led to the defeat.
“Because of the decision to field first in the Champions Trophy final, the omissions and selections in South Africa, the omissions and selections in England, and the selections and omissions in Australia. Someone has to take responsibility for all these decisions. Someone has to be held accountable,” he added.
The Little Master also asserted that if the Indian team failed to beat an Australian team, who are with a second string batting line-up without David Warner and Steve Smith, then the selectors would be needing to rethink their strategy.
“They have to look at the combination of their team, look at the hole that needs to be plugged and pick the men too. If they do that then they can certainly win the next two matches but if they don’t, and that too against this Australian team which does not have Steve Smith or David Warner, then the selectors need to think whether we are getting any benefit from this lot - the captain, coach and support staff,” Gavaskar said.
On the tour of England, in one of the Test matches, Virat Kohli had chosen to go in with two specialist spinners that eventually proved to be a deal breaker for the visitors, who went on to lose owing to a long tail and small batting order. Similarly, another selection error was made in the recently concluded Test against Australia when Kohli chose to go in with an all-pace bowling attack and against India ended up on the losing side.
“We have been seeing this - the selection blunders that have been committed since the tour of South Africa. It has cost the team because it has lost matches which could’ve been won if the proper selection had been made,” he added.
