India vs Australia | Record and Numbers from India’s historic win in Melbourne
India put one step forward in their quest to secure their first Test series win in Australia by ending a 37-year drought to secure a win in Melbourne. While Virat Kohli equalled Sourav Ganguly’s record of highest overseas Test wins, the Test had a lot of things that would be very hard to forget.
1 - This was the first time India secured more than three victories outside the subcontinent in a calendar year. Earlier in 1968, India had won three Tests in New Zealand under the captaincy of MAK Pataudi, which was their most successful year overseas.
3 - This is just third time in India’s overseas Test cricket history that they have declared both the innings. The previous two instances being the 2004 Sydney Test, which was widely criticised for India’s defensive approach, and the Chittagong 2007 Test against Bangladesh. While the previous two Tests ended in draws, this was the first time India secured a win after declaring twice in a Test match.
3- What a year Bumrah has had! He became the third Asian bowler to pick a five-
3 - MCG became the most successful ground for India in Australia as they secured their third victory at the venue. This is also the second time India have won more than one Test in a series in Australia.
9 - Bumrah picked up nine wickets by conceding 83 runs in this Test match, which is the best match figures for an Indian fast bowler in Australia. With six wickets in the first innings and three wickets in the second, Bumrah went past Kapil Dev's 8/109 at the Adelaide Oval in 1985.
11 - Virat Kohli has equalled the record of Sourav Ganguly by securing India’s 11th Test overseas Test win under his leadership. While Kohli has achieved it in 24 matches, Ganguly had taken 28 Test matches to achieve the target.
18 - This was Kohli’s 18th Test victory after winning the toss. However, it is important to be noted that he has never lost a Test after winning the toss. The corresponding numbers for the overseas Tests are pretty impressive as well as he won nine tosses in the overseas Tests and went on to win eight, missing out only the rain-marred encounter in Fatullah in 2015.
20 - Rishabh Pant has effected a total of 20 dismissals in this series which was the most by an Indian wicketkeeper in a series. With this, Pant went past Naren Tamhane and Syed Kirmani - who effected 19 dismissals each in 1954/55 and also against Pakistan in 1979/80.
47 - This was India’s second best series in terms of wickets taken by pacers so far. Now, India’s pacers have taken 47 wickets in the series - just 10 wickets behind the record created by Indian pacers in the five-match series against Australia in 1991-92.
48 - Jasprit Bumrah, who has made his debut in South Africa earlier this year, picked up 48 wickets in the calendar year which is the third most ever for any bowler after Terry Alderman's 54 in 1981 and Curtly Ambrose's 49 in 1988. Earlier, Dileep Doshi had the record for an Indian bowler in his debut calendar year as he took 40 wickets in 1979.
