James Vince called up to replace Dawid Malan for Headingley ODI
James Vince, who is the captain for Hampshire County Cricket Club, has been called up to the England cricket team to replace Dawid Malan for the final ODI against India in Headingley on Tuesday. Malan has been released to play for the star-studded England Lions side against India ‘A’.
Vince last represented the national team in an ODI during the Bangladesh tour in 2016. Post his forgettable tour of Australia and New Zealand, Vince worked hard and got back his form as he scored a brilliant 171 for Hampshire against Yorkshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup semi-final and led his county to the title in the final against Kent. In the one-day tournament, Vince averaged 58 in nine matches and is also averaging 48 in the Championship.
Vince was a regular in the Test side before being dropped from the side for the series against Pakistan due to lack of consistency as there were questions being raised about his technique and character. But, the 27-year-old did not give up and made sure that the selectors did not write him off, which eventually culminated with his national team call-up.
Sam Billings, on the other hand, has struggled with his form of late. A call-up for Vince has also proved that Billings will have to work really hard in the Lions’ set-up to earn his place back in the national team.
The star-studded England Lions side will feature players like Alastair Cook, Chris Woakes, Dom Bess, Malan, and Sam Curran and will be led by Surrey’s Rory Burns. The four-day game against India ‘A’ will be an opportunity for these players to have some practice before the Test series against India.
