Rajasthan Royals request BCCI to get in Heinrich Klaasen as Steven Smith's replacement
Rajasthan Royals have submitted a request to BCCI authorities to bring in South African batsman cum wicket-keeper Heinrich Klassen as they look to replace initial skipper Steven Smith. RR head of cricket, Zubin Bharucha, highlighted Klaasen’s ability to play spin as a key factor in his selection.
The fate of former Australian skipper Steven Smith was decided a few days ago by Cricket Australia authorities, who handed the player a 12-month ban from domestic and international cricket. This also meant that BCCI had to comply with it and they had to
In light of all of the recent events, RR
"Our aim was to get someone who can play spin well because we are pretty sure that spinners will have a big role to play during the IPL. Klaasen is an amazing player of spin. And he has a vast array of shots, which tempted us to go for him. He plays the reverse sweep very well, something that will be quite useful in the IPL," RR head of cricket, Zubin Bharucha told TOI in an interview.
Royals had built their entire squad with Smith being the central figure as he was the only player they chose to retain from their previous squad ahead of the mega-auction. His ban came as a huge blow for the franchise, who
Klaasen will serve as a surprise inclusion in the team due to his largely unknown batting technique in the T20 format of the game. His added ability as a wicket-keeper will be a bonus for the Rajasthan franchise who already have two wicket-keeping batsmen in the form of Jos Butler and Sanju Samson. Moreover, the Proteas batsman will cost the Royals a measly sum of Rs. 50 lakh only which meant that they can save the rest of the amount for Smith when he returns next season.
"Smith will be back with us next year and we did not want to end up with two similar players. Our idea was to build the team keeping three years in mind. Even after Smith is back, Klaasen will be very useful for us," Bharucha added.
