MS Dhoni’s arrival in the international stage in the early 2000s changed the way the game was perceived and batting with low hockey hands made it the new cool. However, very few actually pulled his helicopter shot perfectly and Keemo Paul’s attempt to do one today ended in a terrible way.`
Long-haired and fearless. When MS Dhoni swaggered his way to the international cricket he became an instant crowd favourite with ODI innings of 148 and 183 runs within a year of his debut. His was the style never seen before and his ability to score runs despite a rugged home-made batting technique made people curious about it.
His patented helicopter shot, that he revealed in his biopic was actually the innovation of his childhood friend Santosh Lal, was the one that gave him all adulations. His helicopter six to seal the World Cup final of 2011 is still the most iconic image in the history of Indian cricket, and Sachin Tendulkar entering the stadium in his farewell Test is the only close contestant.
However, every story comes to an end and so is MS Dhoni’s unquestioned presence in the Indian team set-up. He has been dropped from the T20 series against Windies and Australia. Keemo Paul decided to give a homage to the legendary batsman by attempting a helicopter shot, but it would have only made MS Dhoni giggle if was watching the game from his home with his little daughter. The execution of hand movement was clearly perfect, but he failed to judge the length of the ball and could only get a single off that delivery.
