Vijay Hazare Trophy | Jharkhand finish unbeaten in Group C; Gujarat beat Bengal by 41 runs

Jharkhand made their way to a 79-run victory, courtesy Anukul Roy, against Services which made sure they top the table in Elite Group C and secured a last-eight match against Maharashtra in the process. Meanwhile, Gujarat beat Bengal by 41-runs in Chennai, in what was a low-scoring affair.

Elite Group C

Jharkhand v Services

Brief scores: Jharkhand 290 (Kumar Deobrat 88, Saurabh Tiwary 65, Anukul Roy 58; Diwesh Pathania 2/40) beat Services 265 in 47.4 overs (Gahlaut Rahul Singh 75, Rajat Paliwal 68; Anukul Roy 4/53, Varun Aaron 4/55) by 25 runs.

Jharkhand banked on a superb all-round performance from Anukul Roy to creep past Services by 25 runs in Chennai. In doing so, they finished at the top of Elite Group C and will now go up against Maharashtra in the quarterfinals. Jharkhand's innings saw a total of three half-centuries from Kumar Deobrat, Saurabh Tiwary and Roy, who provided the added flair with the bat in the latter stages of the innings. This led to Ishan Kishan’s side posting a competitive total of 290.

Chasing 291, Services were on course for a win for the major part of the second innings after fifties from Rajat Paliwal and Rahul Singh who also put together an impressive 134-run stand for the third wicket. But once the duo was dismissed, Services slowly began to crumble and lost their final five wickets for just 29 runs. Fast-bowler Varun Aaron finished with a four-fer, and so did Roy, who managed to clear the lower-batting order with comfortable ease and seal a win for his side.

Assam v Jammu and Kashmir

Brief scores: Jammu and Kashmir 272/7 in 50 overs (Ahmed Banday 79, Shubham Khajuria 72) beat Assam 193 in 48.2 overs (Amit Sinha 81; Irfan Pathan 3/38, Umar Nazir Mir 3/54) by 79 runs.

Jammu and Kashmir ended their 2018 Vijay Hazare Trophy season on a positive note as they beat debutants Assam by a huge margin of 79 runs on Thursday. Encouraging half-centuries from openers Ahmed Banday and Shubham Khajuria set the tone for Jammu and Kashmir's strong batting performance. And despite the failure of the middle order to get going, they ended up with a total of 272/7 after 50.

Assam never looked to threaten as they lost wickets from the word go. That went on for the most part of the innings, and skipper Amit Sinha was left to wage a lone battle as half of the Assam team was sent back to the pavilion before the 20th over. Abu Nechim offered some support, but it was too late at that stage and Assam fell to a 79-run defeat in their final game of this campaign.

Despite the defeat, Assam finished second last in Elite Group C and avoided relegation to the Plate division.

Bengal v Gujarat

Brief scores: Gujarat 214/9 in 50 overs (Priyank Panchal 50; Pradipta Pramanik 2/36, Mukesh Kumar 2/43) beat Bengal 173 in 44.2 overs (Sudip Chatterjee; Rush Kalaria 3/31, Hardik Patel 2/29) by 41 runs.

In what turned out to be a low-scoring affair, a daunting effort from Gujarat's bowlers helped them defend a below-par total of 214 to emerge victorious against Bengal in Chennai on Thursday. It was an easily achievable target but Bengal never got a steady partnership to keep them on track. Rush Kalaria's 3/31 was the performance of the match along with the rest of the Gujarat bowling attack who all did their part.

Earlier, Gujarat ended up with a score well below expectations after an initial flurry of knocks from openers - Priyank Panchal and Parthiv Patel. In the end, Gujarat had their bowlers to thank who stepped in and saved the day. Despite an easy win, Gujarat missed out on a spot in the quarterfinals, and finished third in Elite Group C behind Haryana.
