Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested for the Test series against West Indies, believes that practice is key when it comes to performing consistently on the international stage. Fellow pacer Bhuvaneshwar Kumar also adds that sticking to the BCCI training schedule helped maintain a rhythm during breaks.

Indian pacers - Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah have forged a highly-successful partnership in the limited-overs format over the last year or so. The duo has been Virat Kohli’s go-to bowlers when in need of a desperate breakthrough. While one is regarded as the master of swing, the other has been labelled as the ‘yorker’ specialist. However, the deadly pair were rested for the recent Test series win over West Indies on home soil in order to keep them fresh and prevent injuries due to excessive workload.

And Bumrah, who is considered to be a ‘death overs’ specialist, admitted that while rest is an absolute necessity, it also affects the rhythm of the bowler in some form or another.

“A break is always refreshing. The flipside is you need match-practice as well. What I try to do is to replicate match-practice in the practice sessions. Good, quality sessions will always hold you in good stead, so that has always been my aim. I try to focus on that.

“When you get a break, you try and focus on things you are not able to focus on while travelling. You need to focus on that and, along with it, things that you want to try and improve or introduce. For all that, match-like practice will help you all the time. Sometimes it looks easy but it’s not. There’s a lot of hardwork going behind executing it in a match. I always believe in preparations; if you prepare well, it becomes easier. The hard thing is practice,” Bumrah told The Hindu on the sidelines of a promotional event for Asics.

Bhuvaneshwar, the senior of the two, also echoed his teammate's sentiments as he added that it was important to stay physically active during rest periods. The SRH bowler also said that he followed the training schedule prepared by the BCCI physios to the dot in order to stay at peak fitness.

"When you are given rest, it means you need break from matches because the workload for practice and that for a match are very different. During the break, the BCCI ensures we keep training either at the NCA or the trainers and physios send us a programme that we have to work on at home.

“It includes all the details like how much will you work out in the gym, how much will you train, how much will you bowl. We stress on continuing to practice because once you lose rhythm, at times, you end up losing two-three matches or a series to get it back. The programme has been well-planned keeping all these things in mind,” Bhuvaneshwar added.
