WI vs IND | West Indies' Predicted XI for the third ODI at Port of Spain
After defeat by a considerable margin in a rain-curtailed second ODI, West Indies will be looking to save some face when they take on India in the final white ball game of the tour on Wednesday. The Carribean team is yet to win a match in the ongoing tour but can level the ODI series with a victory.
Openers
Chris Gayle
Having made history by becoming the first player from his country to accumulate 300 ODI caps in the second ODI, the Universe Boss will be looking to end his career with a bang in what could potentially be his last ever match for his country. The veteran has failed to impress so far but once he gets going, it’s usually curtains for the opposition.
Evin Lewis
He has been the standout batsman for the team in both of the last two matches, having scored a brisk 40 in the first game before following it up with a sturdy 65 in the last match. The batsman has the ability to change gears when needed and will be looking forward to leaving a stamp on the international stage.
Middle-order
Shai Hope
The wicketkeeper-batsman could not live up to expectations in the last match as his score of five was the lowest among any Windies batsman in the top and middle-order. The 25-year-old certainly packs a punch and is the highest-ranked player from his country in the batting rankings, something he’ll be eager to justify in the third ODI.
Shimron Hetmeyer
One of the most explosive options in a squad renowned for scoring at unbelievable strike rates when they get going, Hetmeyer has an impressive international record so far with four centuries to his name. However, with the talent he possesses, he’ll be trying to leave an even bigger mark against India’s clinical bowling attack.
Nicholas Pooran
Few players in world cricket can hit the ball with as much power and as much distance as this youngster. Ending the World Cup as his country’s leading run-scorer, he has carried his form to his homeland as he narrowly missed out on a half-century in the last match. He’ll be looking forward to making more of the starts he gets more often than not.
All-rounders
Roston Chase
Handy with both the bat and the ball, Chase was probably the team’s most impressive bowler in the second ODI. he managed to keep his calm when the Indian batsmen were dominating and ended up giving away only 37 runs in his 10 overs, before following it up with a quick cameo. This will be his chance to secure a spot for himself as a regular in the team.
Jason Holder
The skipper managed to take the all-important wicket of Shreyas Iyer in the last game to restrict India to a chaseable score and stayed not out with the bat while his team collapsed on the other end. One of the team’s most experienced players, he has a crucial role to play in marshalling his young squad to victory against one of the world’s best.
Carlos Braithwaite
After a dismal T20 series in which he failed to captain his team to a victory, the 31-year-old proved his worth on Sunday by tearing through the middle order by taking three wickets including that of centurion Virat Kohli. He is capable of sending the ball out of the park with childish ease once he is in rhythm and can prove to be the team’s X-factor.
Keemo Paul
A newcomer to international cricket, the 21-year-old has a chance to cement his place in the team for good in what will be his debut appearance in the series after Oshane Thomas’ continually dismal performances. He is yet to make a breakthrough performance in ODIs but has a long way to go and every match he plays will only make him better.
Bowlers
Kemar Roach
The veteran pacer failed to trouble the Indian batsmen with his pace that is capable of hitting 150 kph and was hit all around the park in a poor performance in the last match. However, with 123 ODI wickets and lots of experience to his name, the 31year old will be looking to bounce back quickly and will be eyeing redemption.
Sheldon Cottrell
Again one of the team’s most impressive performers, he was among a select few bowlers who managed to contain the flow of runs and restrict the Indian batsman. The pacer had ended the World Cup as the West Indies' leading wicket taker and another fine performance will help him nail his spot as the team’s strike bowler for a long time to come.
