Fast bowlers Diwesh Pathania and Shadab Nazir’s combined nine wicket haul led Services fightback against Assam on Day 2 of the first round of matches in Elite Group C. Elsewhere, Jammu & Kashmir are only seven more wickets shy of completing the first win of the season over Uttarakhand.

After being bundled out for just 124 on day one, Services clawed their way back into the game against Assam through some fine bowling on the following day. Despite Riyan Parag’s patient 66, Pathania’s five for 58 and Nazar’s four for 44 meant they only conceded a lead of 38 runs. In their second innings, Services finished the second day at 130 for four, with skipper Rajat Paliwal unbeaten on 36.

Tripura, who posted 289 on the board courtesy of half-centuries from captain Milind Kumar and Harmeet Singh, forced Jharkhand to follow-on after bowling them out for 136 in their first innings. Rana Dutta (four for 42) and Abhijit Sarkar (three for 43) lead the charge in the first innings but remain wicketless the second time out as Jharkhand reached 91 for two at stumps.

Meanwhile, Jammu & Kashmir continued their strong back after being bundled over for 182 on day one by knocking over Uttarakhand for just 84 runs. Opting not to enforce the follow-on, they rode on strong performances from the lower middle-order — Abdul Samad (60), Fazil Rashid (73), and Ram Dayal (41) — to set their opponents a mammoth target of 403 for victory. But a near-copy of the first-innings performance saw them finish day two reeling at 18 for three.

In the other games, Maharashtra find themselves in a spot of bother at 88 for four in reply to Haryana’s total of 401, while Chhattisgarh, who conceded an 81-run lead to Odisha, finished at 45 for one at stumps in Raipur.
