IND vs WI | Third umpire prompted review in Ravindra Jadeja’s controversial run-out
Third umpire Rod Tucker asked the standing umpire Shaun George to send the decision for a run-out involving Ravindra Jadeja upstairs after looking at the TV replays. In the 48th over of the innings, Roston Chase’s appeal for a run-out against Jadeja was turned down before it was referred upstairs.
A controversial incident took place in the first ODI between India and West Indies as in the 48th over, Jadeja was caught short of his crease while taking a run by West Indies fielder Roston Chase. The Windies appealed and the decision was turned down by George, the standing umpire.
According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the third umpire for the game Rod Tucker, having the accessibility to check replays on TV, asked George to refer “upstairs” for reconfirming his decision. Jadeja was given out after the fallout of the review on replays and that left the Indian skipper Virat Kohli fumed.
"We would have got 15-20 runs more had something not happened out there. The fielder asked about the run-out and the umpire said not out. These dismissals end there. The people sitting outside cannot tell the fielder and they can't ask the umpire about reviewing the run-out," Kohli said at the post-match presentation on Sunday.
"I have never seen this in cricket. I don't know where the rules are. The referee and the umpire has to take it up and decide. The people sitting outside the field shouldn't dictate what happens on the field and that's exactly what happened there," he added.
However, West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard said that the right decision was taken. "At the end of the day, the right decision was made and that's the most important thing for me," he said.
