Kiwi opener Suzie Bates scored 62 off just 52 deliveries to take the home team to a thrilling win against the visiting Indian side in the second T20I of the series. New Zealand has now taken an unassailable 2-0 lead against the Women in Blue in the three-match T20I series with one game to go.

Brief Scores:India Women 135/6 (Jemimah Rodrigues 72, Smriti Mandhana 36; Rosemary Mair 2/17) lost to New Zealand Women136/6 (Suzie Bates 62, Amy Satterthwaite 23; Arundhati Reddy 2/22) by four wickets

After winning the first T20I quite comfortably by 23 runs against the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian side in Wellington, Kiwi skipper Amy Satterthwaite won the toss and elected to field first in the second game at Eden Park, Auckland.

India was off to a poor start while batting first as opener Priya Punia got out cheaply for the second consecutive time in the series. However, in-form Smriti Mandhana and No. 3 Jemimah Rodrigues combined together against the visiting team to take the score past 70 runs inside 10 overs. The 63-run stand for the second wicket was broken by Rosemary Mair as Mandhana was caught for 36 off 27 balls. Although Rodrigues carried on well at the crease, the Indian middle-order failed again in this series. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and Dayalan Hemalatha getting retired hurt didn’t help them either. Rodrigues got out for 72 in the penultimate over and India finished with a score of 135/6 in 20 overs. The 53-ball knock by the Indian No.3 included six fours and one hit over the ropes.

Starting their chase at a required run-rate of close to seven per over, Sophie Devine and Bates added 33 runs for the opening wicket as slow left-armer Radha Yadav gave India the much-needed breakthrough in the 5th over by cleaning up Devine. Yadav came back for her next over and got rid of Caitline Gurrey to keep the White Ferns reeling at 40/2 in seven overs. However, Satterthwaite joined Bates to take them past the 100-run mark inside 15 overs. After Satterthwaite got out for 23, Bates carried on with Katey Martin and also completed her fifty. Things turned again in India’s favour when Arundhati Reddy took two wickets in an over to send Bates and Anna Peterson in the 18th over. With nine runs to win in the last overs, Martin struck Mansi Joshi for a boundary in the first ball got bowled in the second one. The home side scored five runs in last four balls with the game getting over exactly in 20 overs as Hannah Rowe took a single off the final delivery.

"I think we should give credit to our bowlers, it wasn't a good total but still they fought for us. We were 20 runs short, They played better cricket than us. We just need to learn from our mistakes and play better," India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said after the game, reported PTI.
