Cricket can really be harsh at times and if the lady luck doesn’t support you at the right time, then you can hardly do anything about it. Sure enough, Riley Meredith could have done better after he went for 17 runs on one ball - yes, you read it right - after dishing out one extra after another.

When Meredith joined Hobart Hurricanes, he was not even sure about a starting role in the team, but after his heroics against Perth Scorchers, he had many former Test players tweeting praise about him. His sheer pace has been a delight to watch and helped him become a hot property for the Hobart team.

Only in a utopian world, life is so good sans the bricks. Meredith learned that in a hard way when he conceded as many as 17 runs, literally on one ball. It all began when the pacer bowled a huge no-ball in the fourth delivery of the first over to start a procession of extra runs for the Melbourne Renegades on Thursday.

The 22-year-old followed that up with a wide ball and that was so distant from wicketkeeper Matthew Wade that it went to the boundary, giving Renegades five wides. He had already conceded six runs without bowling a legal delivery and hoped to end the nightmare on the next ball. However, the free-hit was still on and the next ball flew to the boundary off Aaron Finch's inside-edge. 11 runs were conceded by then, but the umpire was not convinced about the legality of the ball and after a brief discussion, the on-field umpire gave it a no-ball for height.

Just when Meredith thought his disaster had finally come to an end, Meredith overstepped once again, finishing three consecutive no-balls. Finch too didn't miss out this time as he hit it cleanly to the wide of mid-off boundary for a four, to end Meredith’s misery. By that time, though, he had already conceded 17 runs on that one ball.
