Gautam Gambhir wants selectors to look at Ravichandran Ashwin for upcoming World Cup

Gautam Gambhir is adamant that apart from in-form wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin must be considered for a World Cup spot. The former India opener added that Ashwin is someone who knows to attack batsmen in the English conditions.

The emergence of the wrist spinning magicians - Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal - has truly helped Virat Kohli & Co. establish their dominance in the limited-overs format. The two spinner’s have been a mainstay in the Indian team over the last year as veteran players like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have found themselves on the periphery of the Indian national team.

However, former India opener Gautam Gambhir, reckons that Ashwin must definitely be considered to be a part of the Indian team that will play the upcoming 2019 ICC ODI World Cup.

"Both wrist-spinners (Kuldeep and Chahal) have done well in the last one year. But I still feel that Ashwin is somebody we should look at. I’ve always believed that a quality spinner is a quality spinner – irrespective of whether he is a wrist-spinner or a finger-spinner.

"I think R Ashwin is someone who we should always consider because we are looking at conditions in England during that time of the year. Wickets could be flat and worn out. So a finger-spinner can be effective with the ball as well,” Gambhir said in a promotional event, reported PTI.

Meanwhile, Gambhir also commented on the situation of another Indian left-hander opener like himself - Shikhar Dhawan. Dhawan did not enjoy a fruitful outing in Australia and Gambhir suggested that he should have played some first-class cricket while he was in India which could have helped his game.

“I am a little disappointed because some of the guys should have played first-class cricket. Being away from Test cricket should have actually pushed them to play first-class cricket.

“Whoever was selected to play (only) white-ball cricket, because it is a World Cup year, I think it should have pushed all these guys like MS Dhoni, Shikhar Dhawan and Ambati Rayudu – all those who went to Australia – to play first-class cricket,”Gambhir added.
