ICC World Cup 2019 | Vijay Shankar ruled out for rest of the tournament
India all-rounder Vijay Shankar’s miserable World Cup came to a sad end with the player being ruled out of the tournament after suffering a toe injury during net sessions ahead of the England clash. Reports of Karnataka batsman Mayank Agarwal getting a replacement call up have also emerged.
Rohit Sharma spoke about Shankar's injury in the post-match press conference after Rishabh Pant made his World Cup debut against England earlier on Sunday. However, the extent of his injury wasn’t revealed at that time. A senior BCCI official has now reported to PTI that Shankar’s injury is serious enough to end his World Cup run.
“Vijay got hit on the toe by a Jasprit Bumrah delivery once again. His situation is not great and he won't be able to take part in the tournament. He is going back home," said the senior BCCI official.
"The Indian team management is likely to ask for Mayank Agarwal as replacement since he is an opener and also it might give KL Rahul a chance to get back to the No.4 position in case Rishabh Pant fails in the next two games," the official further added.
Shankar could play only four matches for India in England against Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and West Indies. And he could score only 60 runs, taking two wickets, and conceding 68 runs in bowling.
It has also been reported that Agarwal's name would be fast approved by the ICC's Tournament Technical Committee and the player would be arriving in Birmingham and then travel to Leeds subsequently.
