Virat Kohli re-emphasized that the respect and appreciation for the former skipper, and his efforts for Indian cricket, will always remain sky-high. Kohli also said that every player, if asked, especially the ones offered a chance by Dhoni, will have special things to say about him.

Other than the form of Rohit Sharma, or the impressive Jasprit Bumrah, or Kohli himself not getting a 100, MS Dhoni’s role and effectiveness in the side has perhaps been the most discussed topic among Indian cricket fans and pundits. Ahead of the semi final clash against New Zealand, the current Indian captain was asked about his predecessor’s personality. Kohli obliged to answer, with glee.

“I'm sure everyone, if you asked them about him, have special things to say. And especially for those of us who started our careers under him. For us that doesn't change. The respect will always be there because of the opportunities that he gave us and the faith that he showed in us and the way he's handled the whole team in transition over so many years,” Kohli said at the pre-match press conference, reported TOI.

Kohli only retold the same things he has often said in the past year when asked about Dhoni. In fact, the skipper has enjoyed the role that Dhoni plays in the side.

“I know how difficult it can be to make a transition of captaining the team and then just playing as a player after being captain for so many years and still not being too assertive or too pushy in anything. He gives you space to make your own decisions and to actually discover yourself. That’s been his biggest quality. At the same time, he’s there to give me advice when I go asking,” Kohli said.

Kohli’s point is clear. Dhoni has contributed immensely to the growth of Indian cricket, and has dealt with the transition from captaincy smoothly. Kohli added that as a person, Dhoni is in a happy space.

“When a person has done so much for the team you have to appreciate and acknowledge what he's done for Indian cricket. We are all very grateful for what he has done. And he has always been in a very happy, jovial mood whenever we see him. Yesterday (referring to the birthday celebrations) was again a happy moment for everyone to see a smile on his face. He is in a very comfortable space,” Kohli added.
