Joe Root has stated that the important thing for England now is not to panic, referring to the loss against Pakistan at Nottingham on Monday. The hosts, who are the favourites to lift the World Cup trophy, surprisingly lost to Pakistan, a side who came at the back of 11 consecutive losses.

England had put Pakistan to bat first in Monday’s encounter and things did not turn out as expected, given the sixth-ranked team blasted it’s way to 348 runs. However, the hosts were still expected to win the game due to their batting prowess and eventually fell short of the target by 15 runs despite centuries each from Joe Root and Jos Buttler. Root suggested the team to not panic already and look to bounce back against Bangladesh on Saturday.

“The most important thing now for us as a group is not to panic. We know what works for us as a formula, and as a team, but other sides are allowed to play well and we’ve got to make sure we learn quickly and bounce back at Cardiff,” he told reporters, reported AFP.

“The temptation is to get a little bit tense, but one of our great strengths as a side is sticking to the way we go about things and be as smart as possible,” he added.

The top-ranked team has had a variable run in the early stages of the ten-nation tournament so far. They fell short against Australia in the first warm-up match but followed it up with an emphatic win over Afghanistan in the next. They started their campaign in the tournament with a 104 runs win over South Africa but lost to the out of form Pakistan yesterday. However, seven games are left to be played for England and Root felt that the format will ensure the best team qualifies for the knockouts.

“And the beauty of this format is I do believe the best four teams over the tournament will qualify for the semi-finals and we’ve got to make sure we play some good cricket in our remaining games,” expressed the Test captain.

Bangladesh had defeated the third ranked South Africa in their previous game and will fancy their chances against England. The favourites had a poor day with respect to their fielding and Root stressed on the fact that the same mistake should not be repeated on Saturday.

“One thing this side doesn’t do very often is to make the same mistake twice and I’m sure the guys will make sure it’s a very different performance against Bangladesh,” he signed off.
