ICC World Cup 2019 | Gulbadin Naib slams below-par fielding effort against Bangladesh
Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib has hit out at his players’ below-par fielding performance in their most recent 62-run loss against Bangladesh on Monday at Southampton. Naib was full of praise for man of the match - Shakib Al Hasan - who took five wickets and scored a half-century as well.
Afghanistan succumbed to a disheartening 62-run defeat at the hands of a clinical Bangladesh side led by an in-form Shakib Al Hasan. Gulbadin Naib & Co. fell to their seventh straight loss at the ongoing World Cup in England after a poor performance condemned them to another disappointing result.
Afghanistan skipper Gulbadin Naib lashed out at his players in the post-match press conference as he said that fielding blunders cost his team an extra 35 runs while he defended his decision to bowl first after winning the toss.
"I'm happy with the toss, but if you look at the match, we missed a couple of catches and gave some extra runs. We gave away 30, 35 runs. Because of mis-fielding we missed the opportunity again. Again, we didn't bowl in the right area in first 10 overs, and they scored like 50-something," Naib said as per PTI sources.
Naib, who scored 47 in yesterday’s game, rued his side’s lacklustre performance with the bat as well. The Afghan skipper heaped praise on man-of-the-match Shakib Al Hasan - who took five wickets and scored 51.
"If you look for the wicket, it's chasable. But praise goes to Shakib. He bowled really well. He's the world number one all-rounder. He has a lot of experience, so he took time on the wicket when he batted. Also, he bowled really well, according to the plan," Naib added.
