Royal Challengers Bangalore fans have been handed a massive scare just weeks before the IPL starts with AB de Villiers suffering a back injury which led to him pulling out of Pakistan Super League. The Bangalore-based franchise starts their IPL campaign against champions Chennai Super Kings.

Just when RCB fans had let out a sigh of relief with AB de Villiers returning to T20 cricket following his international retirement and gradually regaining his form, calamity might have struck again with the South African batting star confirming a back injury that would be keeping him out of play for two weeks.

De Villiers was supposed to travel to Lahore in the Pakistan leg of PSL 2019 after the UAE leg would be ending on March 5. However, the player has stated that he won’t be able to make into the last four group matches, the playoffs, and the final that would be held in Karachi from March 9.

“I am very disappointed that I will not be able to play in front of the passionate Pakistani cricket fans. I saw my doctor who has advised complete rest for two weeks and, unfortunately, that rules me out of the games in Karachi,” said De Villiers, reported the Indian Express.

“I hope to be a part of the PSL next year and very much hope to play my part in the return of international cricket to the country. I am backing Lahore Qalandars to go all the way and win the trophy this year,” he added.

The swashbuckling batsman had earlier stated his willingness to play two matches for Qalandars on March 9 and 10, expressing his interest to play a role in bringing international cricket back to Pakistan.

“I felt that I had this opportunity to maybe make an impact to help international cricket return to Pakistan. I was reluctant to go a few years back when we were all a bit worried, but I feel the time is right to go back there,” de Villiers had said in the BBC World Service’s Stumped programme.

De Villiers was among the 14 players retained by RCB before going into the auction. Last season, where the side had finished sixth failing to reach the playoffs, de Villiers had scored 480 runs in 12 matches with a strike rate of 174.54. With skipper Virat Kohli publicly asking his players to not give their 100 percent in the domestic T20 league ahead of the World Cup, an already retired de Villiers would have to step up.
