ICC World Cup 2019 | I would put pressure on Jasprit Bumrah by rotating the strike, says Brian Lara
Legendary cricketer Brian Lara has suggested that if he was facing Jasprit Bumrah, he would have tried to put pressure on the wily bowler by rotating the strike. Bumrah is currently the top-ranked bowler in ODI cricket and will be the bowler to watch out for in the upcoming World Cup.
Jasprit Bumrah’s mystery is yet to be decoded as he has become one of the most impactful bowlers in recent times. On his day, he is unplayable and otherwise he is still very difficult to negotiate. Not every bowler can be dominated and a batsman has to work his way around a bowler of Bumrah’s calibre.
West Indies legend Brian Lara has jokingly stated that he would look to get off the strike if he was facing Bumrah. Lara suggested that he would like to put pressure by rotating the strike rather than going after him, which could be fatal.
“First of all, if I was facing him, I would look to get off the strike (laughs). He is very good and someone who has an awkward action. Batsman have to keep their eyes on him and I would maybe try to apply pressure on him by rotating the strike. In ODI cricket, you have the option of picking up a lot more singles than in T20s.
"In the past, you have seen that when batsmen looked to go after guys like Muttiah Muralitharan or Sunil Narine, it is very difficult and Bumrah has that sort of an effect. I would encourage batsmen to try to get six singles from his over. He is one of India’s best bowlers and then maybe you can look at other areas to get runs from,” Lara said, reported IANS.
Bumrah is one bowler who is equally effective with the old as well as with the new ball. His sharp pace and deceiving action along with impeccable accuracy has made him a threat in contemporary cricket. Lara believes that a bowler like Bumrah should be given due respect at the crease and batsman shouldn’t look to counter-attack.
“I don’t believe counter attacking against such a good bowler is a great idea. He might have a one-off bad day and then batsmen can capitalise but generally he has had very good days. I think I would look to pay that respect,” he explained.
