Reports | Indian players given individual-specific workout routine during lockdown
Players of the Indian cricket team have reportedly been given individual-exclusive workout routines and tasks by S&C coach Nick Webb, as the players self-isolate amidst the nationwide lockdown. Everything, including gyms, grounds and training centers, have been shut across the country.
Unlike the average person who can spend the days and months of self-isolation by pretty much observing a static lifestyle, cricketers - and athletes in general - cannot afford to do the same, given they are required to stay fit and are expected to return to action as soon as they’re called upon, when this pandemic eventually dissipates.
And whilst the Indian players have been killing time in this lockdown period in interesting ways - be it by performing magic tricks or by making tik-tok videos - it is now being learnt that every member of the Indian cricket team has been assigned a player-specific workout routine by strength and conditioning coach Nick Webb, in consultation with physio Nitin Patel. The tasks assigned by Webb are believed to be designed keeping in mind the role of the players - whether they are a batsman or a bowler or a keeper - in order to keep them fit amidst the nationwide lockdown that’s been imposed in order to combat the Covid-19 threat.
"All the players, irrespective of whether they play red-ball cricket or white-ball cricket or all formats, have been given fitness routines which they are to follow and give updates to Webb and Patel from time to time. The routines have been created keeping in mind the demands of the players,” a source close to the team told Times of India.
"So, for example, a bowler has been given exercises which work to make his core and lower body strong. Similarly, a batsman has been given exercises which also work on his shoulders and wrists.”
The source further added that Webb, whilst assigning these routines, also took into consideration the preference of each and every individual and what they generally like to do.
"Someone like a Kohli loves to train with weights as well. So his routine would have weights involved like the clean and jerk and deadlifts and other exercises, while another player might be more comfortable doing free-hand exercises. So in that case, he has been given more free-weight functional training options.”
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) looking all but set to be cancelled, and as the country braces itself to take drastic measures to keep down the spreading of the Covid-19 virus, it might very well be the case that the Indian cricketers might need to confine to fitness routines at homes in the months to follow.
