IPL 2024 | Twitter reacts to vicious Boult-Chahal toppling Mumbai to extend Royals’ winning streak
Rajasthan Royals peppered Mumbai Indians at the latter’s home ground to snap a hat-trick of wins in IPL 2024. Trent Boult’s ruthless spell and Yuzvendra Chahal’s shrewd bowling were backed by Riyan Parag’s fifty as MI failed to gleam in their first home game despite Akash Madhwal’s three-fer.
Brief Scores: MI: 128/8 [ Hardik: 34, Varma: 32; Chahal: 4-0-11-3] lost to RR: 127/4 [Parag: 54*, Ashwin: 16; Madhwal: 4-0-20-3] by six wickets.
Playing their first home game after two losses, Mumbai Indians started roughly as Sanju Samson’s decision to field first reaped rewards for the Rajasthan Royals. Trent Boult spit venom with the new ball, removing Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir in the first over, followed by impact sub-Dewald Brevis for his third wicket, all of which were golden ducks. Subsequently, Nandre Burger struck from the other end by dismissing Ishan Kishan to reduce MI to 20/4 in four overs. Unbothered by the score, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya played a few aerial strokes against the left-arm pair to end a 46-run powerplay. They continued the momentum until the 10th over before the captain holed out in the deep to conclude a 56-run fifth wicket stand. MI could only add 25 runs in the next five overs at the cost of a couple of wickets, followed by 23 in the last five amidst Tim David’s scratchy 24-ball 17 that left MI reeling at 128/9 in 20 overs.
In reply, the Royals suffered early setbacks as Kwena Maphaka and Akash Madhwal removed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson respectively with Jasprit Bumrah exerting pressure from the opposite end. After RR’s 46-run powerplay, Madhwal struck again by inducing Jos Butler to hole out in the deep. However, Riyan Parag and Ravichandran Ashwin steadied the shape with a 40-run partnership before the latter fell prey to Madhwal’s third scalp. With Shubam Dubey holding one end, Parag eventually accelerated and sealed the deal with his third fifty of the season and 27 balls to spare.
