Mumbai Indians earned their second win in IPL 2024 as their top-order steamrolled the RCB bowlers in a chase of 197-run target. The fifties from Faf du Plessis, Rajat Patidar, and Dinesh Karthik were eclipsed by Jasprit Bumrah fifer and blitzkrieg from Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav.

Brief Scores: RCB: 196/8 [Du Plessis: 61, Karthik: 53*; Bumrah: 4-0-21-5] lost to MI: 199/3  [Kishan: 69, Suryakumar: 52; Vijaykumar: 3-0-32-1]

Winning the toss and opting to field in their home game, Mumbai Indians bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Madhwal, backed the captain’s decision with a wicket each inside the field restrictions after getting Virat Kohli and debutant Will Jacks. With the score reading 23/2, Faf du Plessis anchored the innings with Rajat Patidar dining the aggressor’s role. Following a 44-run powerplay, the pair added 45 runs in the next four overs with Patidar smashing consecutive sixes off Gerald Coetzee and getting dismissed in the immediate next delivery for 26-ball 50. Maxwell followed suit for a duck in the next over before Faf and Dinesh Karthik consolidated 45 runs together until Bumrah’s back-to-back scalps, removing the RCB skipper and Mahipal Lomror. With 154/7 in 17 overs, Karthik smacked 30 runs off his last eight deliveries, racing to a fifty to propel RCB to 196/8 amidst Bumrah snapping a fifer.

Unlike their opposition, Mumbai Indians got off to a flying start after a couple of watchful overs. An Ishan Kishan blitzkrieg was up for grabs with Rohit Sharma playing second fiddle inside the powerplay as the former raced to a 23-ball fifty within the sixth over with 40 runs coming off the last two powerplay overs. Following 72 runs in the first six overs, the onslaught continued for MI despite five fielders scattered in the deep with the 100-run stand coming in the ninth over. Subsequently, Kishan holed out in the deep off Akash Deep and Rohit switched gears along with Suryakumar Yadav going berserk. While a stunning take from Reece Topley led to Rohit’s departure, the 33-year-old smoked 17-ball fifty including four sixes and five fours that took the game completely away from RCB. Subsequently, he was dismissed with MI requiring 21 runs from 39 balls. It was just a matter of time before Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma sealed the deal with seven wickets and 27 balls to spare.
