Few characters in the sporting arena are not just a great of the game but also bear unique traits that often captivate the audience. Australia’s Steve Smith could well make the list due to his quirky gestures with a Billy Bowden mimicry after Rohit Sharma’s dismissal being the latest of them.

A 69-run second-wicket stand to recover from Yashasvi Jaiswal’s early dismissal was bogged down by twenty minutes of poor cricket at the fag end of the morning session. Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland removed KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill at cusp of Lunch before Rohit Sharma followed suit after resumption to make way for a Steve Smith quirky act.

Mixing up fuller balls with short of a length delivery in the 26th over, Boland dished a length delivery on the fifth ball of the over that nipped back a way more than Rohit expected. The Indian captain tried to negate the angle but played outside the line, getting beaten on the inside edge to incur a thud. The onfield umpire raised the finger in no time before Rohit walked back to the hut despite a brief conversation with Rishabh Pant. However, the replays failed to capture Smith’s gesture instantaneously where the former Aussie skipper was seen mimicking a Billy Bowden gesture. Smith, amidst the group huddle crooked his pointer finger and raised the arm as Rohit trudged off the field, paying a tribute to New Zealand umpire Bowden. The Twitterverse found it funny and regarded it to be Smith’s post-retirement plans.
