India beat Pakistan by seven wickets to get off the mark in the 2024 Asia Cup. A brilliant bowling performance with three-fer from Deepti Sharma folded Pakistan for 108 before Smriti Mandhana’s 45 and Shafali Verma’s 40 set up a comfortable chase for India Women with 35 balls remaining.

Brief Scores: PAKW: 108 [Brief Scores: Ameen: 25, Sana: 22; Deepti: 3/20] lost to INDW: 109/3 [Mandhana: 45, Verma: 40; Syeda Shah: 2/9]

Eyeing to win a high-octane battle, Pakistan’s decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired as openers Gull Feroza and Muneeba Ali fell inside the powerplay to the pacers. Sidra Ameen tried to soak the pressure through a 37-run powerplay but the continuous loss of wickets at the other end didn’t quite help Pakistan’s cause. The Women in Green’s score read 61/6 in 13 overs before Tuba Hassan and Fatima Sana stitched a 31-run seventh wicket stand. However, Deepti Sharma pegged back at the fag end with three wickets coming off the 18th over. Subsequently, the Indian women took no time to bundle the opposition for 108.

In reply, the Indian Women got off to a great start with 23 runs coming midway through the field restrictions. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma further accelerated to pile up 57 runs inside the powerplay. Although Nashra Sandhu was economical in the immediate next over, the southpaw smashed five fours in the next over to curtail the equation to 30 needed off 12 overs. Mandhana tried to continue the same intent, and on the way got dismissed for 31-ball 45 with India’s tally reading 86/1. India’s new No. 3, Dayalan Hemalatha punished Sandhu’s looseners for three fours in the next over before Shafali Verma was cleaned up with just nine runs short. Hemalatha followed suit in the 13th over before Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur eased the chase with 35 balls in hand.
