West Indies beat Papua New Guinea in the Group C encounter in Guyana by five wickets. Chasing 138 runs, the hosts suffered an early blow with Johnson Charles' wicket and the pressure continued as they lost wickets at regular intervals, but Roston Chase sealed the victory for West Indies in 19 overs.

‌Co-hosts West Indies began their T20 World Cup campaign clashing against Papua New Guinea at Guyana's Providence Stadium. Caribbean skipper Rovman Powell won the toss and opted to bowl first. The PNG openers had a poor start, with Tony Ura departing in the second over and Lega Siaka falling in the third. PNG skipper Assad Vala attempted to shift the momentum, scoring 21 runs off 22 deliveries, but he was dismissed in the sixth over. Sese Bau looked in good form, scoring a fifty off 42 balls and taking the score to 94/5 in 15 overs. Unfortunately, Bau couldn't extend his innings much further and was dismissed in the 17th over. With a quick succession of wickets in the death overs, PNG finished their innings at 136/8 in 20 overs.

The two-time champions had a poor start with Johnson Charles scoring a golden duck and departing in the second over. However, rain interrupted play for 15 minutes as play resumed with Nicholas Pooran and Brandon King taking the scorecard to 27/1 at the end of four overs. Pooran switched gears thereafter smacking two maximums a four cruising the scorecard to 52/1 at the end of the powerplay. Unfortunately, Pooran fell short of a big score and departed in the ninth over scoring 27 runs. Things became a little tense for West Indies as they lost the wickets of King and Rovman Powell with the scorecard at 94/4 in 15 overs. With Roston Chase and Sherfane Rutherford on the crease, the West Indies required 43 runs off the last five overs. The worry continued for them when they lost Rutherford in the 16th over. However, Andre Russell and Chase sealed for West Indies and won the game by five wickets.
