India beat Australia by 24 runs to end the Super Eight stage on a high and reach the semi-finals. Rohit Sharma’s 92 set up a formidable total followed by bowling brilliance that eclipsed Travis Head’s gutsy fight as the Kangaroos’s qualification chance heavily relies on Afghanistan’s performance.

Brief Scores: IND: 205/5 [Rohit: 92, Suryakumar: 31; Starc: 2/45] beat AUS: 181/7 [Head: 76, Marsh: 37; Arshdeep: 3/37] by 24 runs

Eyeing a much-needed win for a semi-final spot, fortune favored Australian captain Mitchell Marsh during the toss and he sent the Indian side to bat first. Openers, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli failed to chalk a decent stand as Josh Hazlewood outsmarted the latter in the second over. Unbothered by the early blow, the Indian skipper charged Mitchell Starc for a 29-run third over that included four sixes. He continued the gung-ho approach, racing to 19-ball 50 to wrap up a 60-run powerplay. Subsequently, India added 54 runs in the next four overs despite Rishab Pant’s dismissal with Rohit smacking Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis to all corners of the field. With the skipper reaching the nineties after the eleventh over, Starc returned to conclude Rohit’s stay for 92 before Suryakumar Yadav produced a 16-ball 31 cameo in the middle. A 35-run partnership followed between Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube, propelling India’s tally to 205/ in 20 overs.

Similar to their counterparts, Australia incurred an early setback in the form of David Warner before Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head followed the Indian pattern of peppering the hard new ball inside the field restrictions. Following a 65-run powerplay, Kuldeep’s tight bowling was neutralized by Hardik Pandya’s 14-run eighth over before the former eventually, outsmarted Marsh with Australia’s score reading 87/2 in nine overs. Subsequently, Glenn Maxwell and Head consolidated for a 41-run third wicket stand before Kuldeep cleaned up the former and Axar removed Stoinis in the immediate next over. With 65 needed off the last five overs, on-song Head succumbed under pressure and Arshdeep Singh cleared the lower middle order with two scalps in the 18th over. Requiring 39 in 12 balls, Bumrah’s 10-run over eased Hardik Pandya’s task to defend 29 runs as Australia fell short of 24 runs.
