If captaincy was an art, Ben Stokes certainly would’ve been a renowned artist. In his absence, stand-in captain Ollie Pope failed to step up with precision as he recorded a tenth unsuccessful review in the third session of the third day in the Oval Test between England and Sri Lanka.

The overnight Sri Lankan batters failed to show grit in the early morning, resulting in a 265-run first innings total. In reply, the visitors' bowlers capitalised on the helpful bowling conditions and bundled the hosts for 156, leaving a 219-run target to be surmounted. The English pacers struggled to take wickets as the day progressed, with a poor review from Pope rubbing salt in their wounds.

Following a sumptuous drive on the first ball of the fourth over, Nissanka got beaten on the inside edge while attempting another one off Gus Atkinson’s good length delivery. As the ball seamed in nicely and thuded the pad, Pope opted for a review after the original verdict favoured the Lankans. However, the ball tracking showed that the leg stump was vividly missing following a clear Ultraedge, Pope was left devastated. Having burnt ten reviews so far in the three-match red-ball series, the Twitterverse broke into debate on the Surrey batter’s captaincy stint.
