MS Dhoni ran out Abdul Samad at the non striker's end

Over a career that has lasted more than two decades, there are very few things that MS Dhoni has not achieved on the field. However, in the game against Lucknow Super Giants, the veteran keeper ran out Abdul Samad at the non striker’s end without, apparently, trying to do so.

Having suffered five defeats in a row for the first time in IPL history, Chennai Super Kings fought back well against Lucknow Super Giants by restricting the hosts to a mere 42 in the powerplay. However, Ayush Badoni and Rishabh Pant led the fight back Lucknow went past the three digit number with just three wickets back in the hut.

With the score at 109/4 by the end of the 15th over, the hosts needed a flurry of runs to get to a competitive score. The incoming Abdul Samad and well-settled Pant started upping the ante. An Abdul Samad six ensured Pathirana conceded 9 in the next over before the Sri Lankan conceded 18 off his next one. With Khaleel conceding another 16 in the penultimate over, LSG looked to be heading to a very very competitive score. However, there was one man standing in their way - MS Dhoni.

On the second ball of the last over, Pathirana bowled a loose delivery outside leg stump that Dhoni collected easily. Pant had already sped over for a quick single before Samad got into his stride. However, as the Lucknow batter ran across, Dhoni appeared to just underarm throw the ball back to the bowler. The ball, though, sailed over him and landed on the stumps. While it appeared to be a close call, Samad started walking off. The third umpire did not need too much time to come to a decision either as the batter was well short of his crease.
