The T20 World Cup has almost started, with the warm-up matches taking place. Still, the ICC is indulging in solving the issue between India and Pakistan, which has led to boycott talks. With Pakistan eager to boycott the game, they might also face some legal consequences.

The T20 World Cup is now a few days away but the tensions still persist. Earlier it was the tension between the BCCI and the BCB. With Bangladesh deciding not to play their games in India, they were eventually ruled out of the tournament. The ICC also must have thought that the issues have now been solved.

But just after Bangladesh's matter, Pakistan came into the case. The team has just made it clear that they would be playing each and every game, except for the match against India. This has brought down some backlash and troubles, as the ICC tries to ensure that the match takes place. Along with that, the PCB is also likely to have some legal troubles.

1. Announcement Soon?

When Bangladesh was replaced by Scotland in the T20 World Cup, Pakistan also entered the clash. There were rumours that the team is deciding to boycott the game against India. These rumours were also confirmed when the Government of Pakistan tweeted about the same. Their tweet confirmed that the team would be playing all the games in the T20 World Cup.

But they will not be taking the field in the match against India. Now, just three days are left for the T20 World Cup to begin, and the clash between India and Pakistan will also take place next week. It is still not clear whether the match will be taking place or not, since Pakistan has decided to boycott this game.

However, it is being reported that the next 48 hours will be crucial for Pakistan. The reports also said that the PCB is violating a rule in the contract. It said, “PCB is violating a contract that it is itself a co-signee of. The agreement states that India and Pakistan will participate in ICC events and play against each other at neutral venues. There is no force majeure clause in that agreement. As only one match has been singled out, there needs to be clarity on whether the government has said no to any sporting activity with India.”

2. Legal Troubles

The viral reports also talked about the legal consequences which can be faced by the PCB. It is likely that the board will have to pay for the losses which will be suffered by the broadcasters, in case this game does not take place. This will be a big trouble for the team, as they will have to pay to the JioStar, the streaming partner of the matches.

An official from the PCB has also reacted to this situation. He said, “If Pakistan doesn’t relent and play against India, they could face financial penalties, possible lawsuits from broadcasters, and any attempt to approach the ICC’s Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) is likely to fail.”

The reports also claim that even if there was no government intervention, the PCB would have faced consequences if they decided to boycott on their own. Over the last two years, India and Pakistan have been playing against each other at neutral venues, including their clash in the Champions Trophy.

The PCB has argued that the ICC has favoured the BCCI more. The Champions Trophy 2025 was hosted by Pakistan, but India had all of its games scheduled at Dubai. Even though the clash between India and Pakistan will take place in Sri Lanka, the Pakistani team has decided to boycott the same.

3. India and Pakistan’s Last T20 WC Clash

As always, India has come out to be dominant against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup. With their confidence boosted due to the win against Pakistan in T20 WC 2022, the team also entered the 2024 edition. India was batting first in this game and they were bowled out for 119 runs in 19 overs.

Rishabh Pant was the top run scorer with 42 runs, and Axar Patel was the only batsman except him who crossed 20 runs mark. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf took 3 wickets each, while Mohammad Amir took 2. Pakistan had a low target of 120 runs to chase and get an impressive win.

The team stood at the score of 80/3 in 14 overs, when Jasprit Bumrah decided to turn the game. He took the wicket of Rizwan, and Pakistan's middle-order batting line-up crumbled. Naseem Shah tried his best to help Pakistan win the game, but his team fell short by just 6 runs.
