England experienced a nervy deja vu as they went about sealing their spot in the Super Eights of the T20 World Cup in Kolkata. The two-time champion survived some scary moments, similar to their opening encounter against Nepal, before pulling off a 24-run win over Italy in their Group C encounter.

‌England followed West Indies into the Super Eight of the T20 World Cup 2026 with a thrilling 24-run win over Italy in Kolkata on Monday. The two-time champion had an electric start after opting to bat at the Eden Gardens before a middle-order slump saw them slip to 105/5 in the 13th over.

However, Will Jacks’ whirlwind unbeaten knock of 53 off 22 balls, which included four sixes and three fours, helped the side finish at a formidable 202/7. The England bowlers, then, reduced the Italians to 22/3 before a 92-run association between Ben Manenti (60) and Justin Mosca saw the side stay afloat in the competition.

But a double-wicket over from Sam Curran saw the T20 World Cup debutants slip to 139/7, with 64 runs further needed from the last four overs. Just as England was about to tick off their entry to the next stage, Grant Stewart did a Lokesh Bam to give the fielding unit a sense of deja vu from their narrow four-run win in the opener against Nepal.

After smashing two sixes off pacer Jofra Archer in the 17th over, Stewart took on Adil Rashid in the next over as the game took an interesting turn. With Jaspreet Singh starting off the leggie’s over with a six, Stewart kept up the scoring push with two more maximums.

After getting hit over wide long on while trying to cramp the batter, the veteran spinner tried to toss one up away from the arc off the last ball. But unfortunately, he met with the same response as Stewart leaned towards the ball before muscling it over the long off boundary.

The batter was visibly pumped as the dugout also leapt up in joy, with the equation getting reduced to 30 from the last two overs. Meanwhile, the England camp looked jittery and was subjected to the same emotions they had experienced in their inaugural match of this edition.

Stewart simply scared England!
