After being out of action for 2-3 months, Shreyas Iyer has made his much awaited comeback to the game. Playing for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he seems fit and ready for the New Zealand series. In his comeback game, he played as if he was never gone.

Shreyas Iyer could be termed as the fighting player of the Indian cricket team. He suffered a threatening injury a few months back, and even spent a few days admitted in the ICU. But now, he has made his return to professional cricket, after missing out action for a few months.

His return is still awaited by the fans in international cricket, which might happen on 11 January. Preparing for the New Zealand series, Iyer decided to step in for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He played his first game in months, and it still seems that he was just never gone from the game.

1. Iyer’s Comeback Match

Shreyas Iyer was announced as a part of Mumbai's squad for its match against Himachal Pradesh. He was among the only players from the India's squad against New Zealand, who was set to play in the current round of Vijay Hazare Trophy. And to make things even better, Shreyas Iyer was also announced as the captain of the team for this match.

The match was affected due to the weather conditions, and reduced to 33 overs per side. Mumbai was batting first in this game, and Shreyas Iyer came to bat at number four. The team stood at 55/2, but Iyer took his time to get himself settled on the crease. And once he was familiar, he went on a rampage to announce his comeback.

Iyer went on to score 82 runs off 53 balls for the team, with 10 fours and 3 sixes. It was a brilliant knock, noting the fact that he was the captain of the team in this match. This shows that Iyer is now ready to make his comeback to the Indian team, after missing out on the series against South Africa due to an injury.

2. Injury Issues

If we take a look at the current squad of the Indian team against New Zealand, Shreyas Iyer has his name mentioned there. But there is also a short note regarding his availability for the matches. His availability will be subjected to the clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence, after which he will be eligible to play for the team.

He suffered a life-threatening injury in the second ODI match against Australia at Sydney. In this game, Iyer ran backwards to take the catch of Alex Carey. While he was able to take the catch successfully, he fell down and injured his spleen. He landed in such a way that his elbow hit hard on his ribcage area.

This even resulted in Iyer suffering from internal bleeding in his spleen. He received immediate medical attention, and was also taken to the hospital. There, it was revealed that Iyer had suffered a laceration in his spleen. The doctors in Sydney performed a surgery, which prevented the injury from being serious.

The reports even said that his injury showed critical signs in the initial stages. He had suffered from low oxygen levels, which prompted the medical officials to take him to the ICU. After spending a few days in the Sydney Hospital, he was discharged and taken back to India. The entire time, officials from the BCCI stood with Shreyas Iyer.

3. Iyer Prepares for NZ Series

Shreyas Iyer will be making his comeback to international cricket after missing out almost three months of action. He played just two ODI games against Australia, where he was able to give his best to the team. And now, he will be coming back to play for India against New Zealand, and his stats against the Kiwis have been phenomenal.

Shreyas Iyer at Number 4:

  • Innings: 43
  • Not Out: 6
  • Runs: 1893
  • Average: 51.16
  • Strike Rate: 98.23
  • 100s: 4
  • 50s: 13

Fans would remember his rapid fire century against New Zealand in the semi-final of the World Cup 2023. While batting at number four, he holds an impressive average of 51, which makes him a vital batsman for the Indian team. His capability to score runs even when wickets have fallen quickly is what makes him different from the other batsmen.
