The Ashes has now come to an end, and it has made some changes to the WTC scenario. Australia still remains at the top of the table winning 7 games out of the 8 they have played. England still remains behind India in the standings, which opens the way for India in the WTC final.
The race to the World Test Championship 2027 final has got more heated. Fans waited for the most anticipated series of the tournament, which was The Ashes, hosted by Australia. And the hosts were able to dominate against England with ease, showing why they are a champion team in the Test format.
Australia was able to win the series in the first three games, as they won all of them. After winning the final match of the series, the team claimed The Ashes by 4-1. A positive news for the Indian fans is that the Indian team still remains in contention for the World Test Championship final.
1. Current WTC Standings
As per the current World Test Championship standings, Australia remains at the top. The team has played 8 games in the current cycle and they have been able to win 7 of them. The sole loss which has been suffered by the team also came against England in the fourth Test.
Australia is also having an impressive winning percentage of 87.50, which may be enough to help them enter the finals. Just a few more Test wins will seal the spot for the Aussies in the finals. They are closely being followed by New Zealand, who hold a winning percentage of 77.78, in the three games they have played.
The defending champions, South Africa, is also having a good run in the current WTC cycle. They are standing at the third spot in the WTC standings, with their winning percentage being 75 after four games. The team has won three games which also includes a clean sweep against India in a two match series.
India is placed at 6th in the current WTC cycle. This is also the lowest the team has ever been in any WTC cycle, marking their lows in the transition phase. The team has played 9 games, and holds just 4 wins, due to which their winning percentage stands at 48.15. Sri Lanka and Pakistan stand above India in the current cycle.
2. India's Qualification Scenario
India was scheduled to play 18 matches in the current World Test Championship cycle. Out of these scheduled games, India has played a total of 9 games. It also means half of their WTC cycle has already been completed, with the team being at just 6th spot after this.
A rebound from their recent form would help the Indian team to remain in contention for the WTC final. India will be playing 9 more Test matches till the finals of the tournament. And out of these 9 games, the team will have to win at least seven of their matches to put them close to the finals.
However, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa are looking way too strong. Their winning percentage stands above 70, which makes things a bit more challenging for the Indian team. Therefore, India will require 8 wins of their remaining 9 games if Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa continue to play at the same momentum.
This looks a bit challenging for the Indian team, knowing the fact that the team is going through a transition phase. However, India is still having some time before their next Test match to ensure that they get back to the track. The recent loss against South Africa in the home series has affected their chances a lot.
3. India's Remaining WTC Matches
India has 9 games remaining in their current WTC cycle, which will also determine their qualification. Out of these, four games will be played by the Indian team away, and the remaining five will be played at home. However, it should also be noted that India does not have any home games of the WTC cycle at home in 2026.
India will be going through two away series in 2026 against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. These series will be of two games each, and it will be important for India to prevent losing even a single game in the same. After this, the remaining five games for the Indian team will be against Australia at home.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 was also the series which led to some major retirements. Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, marked this as their last Test series. Maybe the 2027 BGT will be the time when the young guns take revenge of the previous series loss.
