New Zealand were left with the daunting task of defending 300/8 on a good batting track in Vadodara on Sunday after being hunkered down by a frequent fall of wickets in the first ODI. A good start with the new ball through quicks Kyle Jamieson and Zakary Foulkes certainly helped their cause, the duo giving away just 10 runs in the first four overs, until Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill let loose to take the score to 35/0 by the end of seven. However, the new ball was still doing a fair bit in the hand of Foulkes, who beat Rohit with an absolute jaffa on the first ball of the eighth over, and nearly bagged the price wicket too albeit he could have taken little credit for it.

Foulkes subjected Rohit to three successive dots, which meant the former Indian skipper inevitably lashed hard at a length ball outside off which followed. The Kookaburra seemed destined for the boundary as it left the bat with the speed of a tracer bullet, only to be denied by a superhuman effort. Glenn Phillips, stationed at point, leapt to his left with his hand outstretched, each part of his body taking to air like duck to water, and the Kiwi hung in the the breeze longer than kiwis can to grab the white rock out of thin air. However, as he descended back to the realm of mortals, the ball just slipped out of his hand. Even then, in an inane feat of agility, Phillips mid air had a second swipe at the ball but could not get it in his grasp, and the chance slipped away. Unsurprisingly, Phillips had a huge grin on his face as did Foulkes, while the two Indian batters could not help but laugh out loud thanking their good graces at having been spared for a shot other fielders would have had no chance of getting near.
