Serie A giants AS Roma are ready to make a new offer for Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren before the transfer window closes on September 2. The Croatian international has fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool as Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have taken his place in the starting line up.

AS Roma were initially in for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani, but the Bianconeri have rejected the bid and now the club has turned its attention towards Dejan Lovren, according to Corriere Dello Sport. Earlier in the transfer window, Lovren had attracted interest from some of the top Italian clubs, but discussions regarding a move did not go anywhere.

Liverpool are keen to hold on to the Croatian star as their backline has proved to be injury prone in the past. Last season’s Champions League winners are also looking forward to finally lay their hands on the elusive Premier League trophy, which they have never won. However, with his game time compromised, Lovren believes it will be better for him to leave Anfield.

This season, Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk have become the main backbone of the Reds defence with youngster Joe Gomez next in line to take over.

Italian reports claim that Roma’s sporting director Gianluca Petrachi will go to Liverpool and offer a lucrative deal for Lovren, and promise him adequate game time at the club. Roma are hopeful of sealing a loan move with an option to buy for the 30 year old centre half.
