ISL failed to keep up with fans’ expectations, says Bhaichung Bhutia
Bhaichung Bhutia has stated that the Indian Super League has lost its hype in the last five years failing to keep up with the fans’ expectations and the AIFF should look at re-framing the league structure to get back the shine. His comments come amidst the tussle between I-League clubs and AIFF.
The former India captain has come down strongly on the All India Football Federation and the way it has been handling proceedings at the club level. With reports emerging of AIFF promoting the Indian Super League as the nation’s top tier league and I-League either becoming League One or going into oblivion, both the fans and I-League clubs are fuming.
In a recent committee meeting by the I-League clubs, it was decided that they would go to the court against AIFF if such a thing happened. Debates of a unified league or introducing promotion and relegation in the two leagues are doing the rounds and Bhutia has asked the federation to sort things out fast amidst uncertainty.
“I think it is important for all of them to come together and find a complete solution for the betterment of Indian football. It is important that everyone shuns their egos and work to create a good ecosystem for Indian football,” Bhaichung said on Wednesday, reported PTI.
“It is very essential to re-frame the league structure because even ISL has lost much of the hype since it was started five years ago. It has not been able to keep itself up to expectations of the fans of Indian football,” he added, mentioning the importance of the presence of clubs like East Bengal and Mohun Bagan to add more prestige to any league in the country.
An executive committee meeting has been scheduled for July 3 when the AIFF and ISL along with marketing partner IMG- Reliance would decide upon the future of the Indian football.
