It’s been weird playing under Frank Lampard, admits Willian
With Frank Lampard taking over from Maurizio Sarri as the Chelsea boss, Willian has admitted that it’s weird to play under his former teammate. The 31-year-old has become a key part of Lampard’s squad and has missed only three games but has played every minute of the last four Premier League games.
Blues’ legend Frank Lampard replacing Maurizio Sarri had a lot of Chelsea fans spectical about just how good their club legend was as a manager. But twelve games into the season and a large majority of Chelsea fans have already fallen in love with their new manager. Not only has Lampard changed the team but the former Derby County manager has transformed the older players. The likes of Matteo Kovacic, Willian, Pedro, and even Jorginho have all done relatively well.
However, Willian has admitted that playing under his former team-mate has been rather strange but the Brazilian went on to admit that he’s not surprised that Lampard is a manager. The pair played together for one season in 2013 before Lampard eventually left the Blues for the MLS and the Brazilian went on to add that the Englishman has given him the confidence and a chance to put his best foot forward for Chelsea once again.
"He was an intelligent player, one of the best in his position. A quality player. When you see players like him you can say maybe in the future he can become a manager, and he's here with us! It's a bit weird he is my boss now, but I am very happy to work with him again. He has given me the confidence to play. He wants me to be happy. A part of the performances I have had in the past couple of games I have to dedicate to him. He always says to me 'I want you to be happy'. That's why I have been playing like I have been,” said Willian to the club’s website.
The Blues’ legend endured a mix start to his life as a Chelsea boss only getting his first win after three winless games. But since then, the Stamford Bridge side have been on a decent run of form losing just one game in the Premier League and currently sit just one point behind third-place Arsenal. Not only that, Lampard has won plaudits for his reliance on the academy players with Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham playing big roles.
"I think our style of play has helped me, but not only that. The freedom he gives to us is important as well. I don't have to stay on the right side. I can move around, I can move between the lines, I can move to the left side as well,” concluded Willian.
