However, Sevilla are unwilling to sell Carlos this month especially with them in the middle of a title race and are looking for a fee somewhere close to his €80 million release clause. Marca has further reported that Newcastle are unwilling to pay that much for the defender but are still hopeful that they can get a deal done.

This comes despite their move for Chris Wood, for a similar fee, with Eddie Howe keen on signing two new strikers this month.

David Moyes is unsure about West Ham's transfer business this month

Following the 2-0 win over Norwich City, David Moyes admitted that West Ham have been trying to bring in someone to help out Michail Antonio over the last two years but nothing has worked so far with players struggling to make an impact. The Hammers are reportedly targetting two players this month including a central defender alongside a forward.

"We've been trying to get someone to give us competition for two years with Micky [Michail Antonio]. It's not easy bringing in a centre forward and this club has probably brought in the most forwards in recent years trying to make it work," Moyes said in his post-match press conference.

"We'll try to bring in players but I'm not going to do it for the sake of it. I'd rather not waste the club's money if there's not the right player out there but I'm hoping to do business.  Maybe by the end of the window, they'll be some news but there's not been a huge amount of transfer activity out there. I'm not seeing huge movement at this moment in time."

Wood has signed a two-and-a-half year contract and arrives in time to feature in Saturday's Premier League clash with Watford at St. James' Park.
