Gujarat Fortunegiants produced one of the best defensive performances in the tournament as Fazel Atrachalli and Abozar Mighani scored nine and four tackle points respectively. Pune tried to comeback in the second half of the game but their raiders had no answers to Gujarat's defensive prowess.

Sukesh and Fazel provide control for Gujarat Fortunegiants

Deepak Hooda won the toss and invited Gujarat Fortunegiants to raid first. After one round of blank raids from the both teams, Sachin opened the tally with a bonus point for Gujarat and soon they grabbed Deepak Hooda and sent him out of the mat. Puneri Paltan trapped Sachin by an ankle hold and found a place for him on the bench and opened their account with the scores at 2-1, and were able to level the scores as Rohit Gulia stepped out of the line. The Gujarat and Pune skippers then scored two consecutive raid points each to take the scores to 5-4.  After two empty raids, Gujarat attempted a do-or-die raid, but Sachin failed to score at the crucial juncture and Puneri Paltan were able to tie the score at 5-5. After Sukesh’s running hand touch, Gujarat’s strong defence led by Abozar Mighani helped the team to a four point lead. During the Super Tackle, Pune’s defender stepped on the line which just made matters worse for his team, and Sukesh Hegde took full advantage, with his raid resulting in the first all-out of the game, taking the game to 14-5. Sachin’s point at the end of the first half was possibly too little, too late, as Gujarat  had done the damage and led half with the score reading 16-7.

Pune’s raiders draw blanks against Gujarat’s stout defence

Pune started the second half with a positive mindset as More and Rohit Kumar Chaudhari earned two raid points, but Gujarat won their do or die raid to take score to 17-9. From then on, Pune consistently lost players as their attempts to gain a foothold in the game became more desparate. First, they lost More in a do or die raid, but looked to stage a comeback as Hooda added valuable points to take the score to 18-11. At one point, Gujarat even had four players in the game, and Pune could and should have taken advantage, but the former’s defence prevailed, and they eventually added to their advantage to take their lead to 10. Gujarat’s gamesmanship came to the fore next, as they sent Hooda out in his next raid with the scores at 24-16. It was all about Gujarat thereafter, with Fazel completing his high 5, Pune going down to 3 players and then losing their skipper. Pawan made the advantage count as he earned 2 raid points in 1 attempt, and finally Gujarat inflicted their second all-out of the game by sending out Pune’s final player, Girish, and they finished the game with a comprehensive 35-21 thrashing.
