According to Goal, the third edition of the AIFF Super Cup is most likely to be played in September this year. The first two editions of the knock-out tournament, which includes ISL and I-League teams, were played in the month of March-April in 2018 and 2019, after the conclusion of both leagues.

Amidst the controversy surrounding various I-League clubs and the All India Football Federation (AIFF), Goal has reported that the third edition of the Super Cup will be played before the start of the leagues which is in contrast to the event taking place after the Champions had been crowned. The first two editions were held in Bhubaneswar in March and April while this time, it is more likely to be held in September.

The Super Cup will mark the beginning of the 2019-20 domestic league football season in the country. The AIFF is targeting the two international breaks between September and October to host the event.

In the second edition of the Super Cup, seven I-League clubs - Aizawl, NEROCA, Gokulam Kerala, East Bengal Mohun Bagan, Minerva Punjab, and Churchill Brothers had boycotted the tournament with a demand of meeting the AIFF president to discuss the future of the I-League clubs.

Bengaluru FC defeated East Bengal in the final of the first edition of the tournament in 2018 while ISL runners-up FC Goa won the Super Cup in 2019.
