Ravi Shastri has been appointed as the new coach of the Indian cricket team as a replacement for the recently departed Anil Kumble, reports have emerged. Shastri served as the director of the team from 2014 to 2016 and was then one of the front-runners in last year’s coach selection as well.

It was reported that Shastri was backed strongly by Indian skipper Virat Kohli and the current crop of players as such the new appointment has not come as a surprise. The former India all-rounder initially served as the team director from 2014 to 2016 and India also enjoyed a fair amount of success under him as India reached the semifinals of both the World Cup 2015 and also the World Twenty20 2016.

Last year, Shastri had also applied for the post but Anil Kumble was preferred over him and the latter was handed a one-year contract that ended after the 2017 Champions Trophy. But the legendary leg-spinner stepped down from the post ahead of India's tour of West Indies following his “untenable” relationship with Kohli.

The CAC interviewed Shastri yesterday along with former India opener Virender Sehwag, Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody, former Pakistan coach Richard Pybus, and Afghanistan coach Lalchand Rajput. CoA chief Vinod Rai had asked the CAC to announce the name of the head coach today despite Sourav Ganguly stating that the committee would want to discuss the candidates with the Indian captain.

Kumble took over as head coach of the Indian team in July 2016 and spearheaded India to a Test series victory in West Indies in his first assignment. India registered 10 victories in the 13 Tests during the home season and rose to the top spot in the Test rankings. India also registered ODI series wins over New Zealand and England and lost only one series, a T20I series against West Indies in Florida, and the Champions Trophy final against Pakistan.

NOTE: However, contrasting reports have emerged that Shastri has not been given the role yet as the CAC are still undecided. Follow the story here.
