Suresh Raina offers insight on MS Dhoni’s promotion up the batting order

Suresh Raina revealed the reason behind why MS Dhoni has been pushed up the batting order in the Indian cricket team is so that he can finish games alongside the batsmen at number five or six. Earlier, Rohit Sharma had also supported the management’s decision to promote Dhoni up the batting line-up.

The Indian cricket team have hit top form in the first month of 2019 itself as they ended their tour of Australia with a historic 2-1 series win down under. MS Dhoni was the star of the show on Australian soil as he enjoyed a more prominent role in the Indian batting line-up after being promoted to number four. Dhoni was adjudged as man of the series after scoring close to 193 runs from three games against Aaron Finch & Co.

India all-rounder and CSK teammate, Suresh Raina, lavished praise on the veteran Indian wicket-keeper as he revealed that the number four batting position was ideal for Dhoni.

Last couple of games (against Australia), he has been batting well. He can bat well with the tail-enders also. If he can bat at four, he can also finish games with the five, six and seven. A lot of players can play around him.

“He has been playing with a positive frame of mind. He is hitting the ball really well, and most importantly, he is getting a lot of backup and support from Virat (Kohli). If you have the support of the captain, then you just go out there and express yourself. The No 4 slot suits him,”  Raina told Sportstar.

The Indian cricket team, under the leadership of Virat Kohli, enjoyed a positive start to their New Zealand tour as well after they won the series opener against the Kiwis by eight wickets. Dhoni’s services were not needed as Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan ensured that the Indians would chase down a measly target of 158 with comfortable ease. Earlier, Indian ODI vice-captain Rohit Sharma also supported Ravi Shastri and the rest of the management team’s decision to bump Dhoni up the batting order.

“Personally, I always feel him batting at No. 4 will be ideal for the team,” Rohit told reporters after end of the first ODI. “Rayudu has done really well now at No. 4, so it totally depends what the captain and coach thinks about it. Personally asking, yes, I would be happy if he (Dhoni) bats at No. 4,” Sharma said.
