Kane Williamson (89) and Shikhar Dhawan (70) were the stars for the defending champions as the Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated the Delhi Daredevils by 15 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Earlier, Chris Morris picked up all four wickets for the Delhi Daredevils.

Brief Scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 191/ 4 (Kane Williamson 89, Shikhar Dhawan 70; Chris Morris 4/26) defeated Delhi Daredevils: 176/5 (Sanju Samson 42, Shreyas Iyer 49; Mohammad Siraj 2/39) by 15 runs

Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and opted to bat, bringing in Kane Williamson and Mohammed Siraj, making his debut, in place of Mohammad Nabi and Barinder Sran.

On the other hand, Delhi Daredevils made just one change, bringing in Jayant Yadav in place of Mohammed Shami.

Delhi dominate the early exchanges

Delhi took charge of the early proceedings with Chris Morris removing the in-form David Warner for 4 runs. Kane Williamson and Shikhar Dhawan tried to rescue the home side but the early loss of their skipper meant that the duo couldn’t make the most of the powerplay as they ended with just 39/1 after six overs.

Dhawan and Williamson combine to take complete control

Williamson and Dhawan understood the need to accelerate and stepped on the gas in the next few overs with a flurry of boundaries, which included two consecutive sixes off Mathews by Williamson, and at the halfway stage, SRH were much better placed at 80/1. With Williamson and Dhawan steadying the Sunrisers ship, the game was evenly poised at the midway point.

Williamson brought up his 50 off just 33 balls and the duo continued to milk the attack as they brought up their 100 partnership off just 70 balls in the 14th over, before the the Kiwi launched into Amit Mishra in the same over, taking him for 14 runs which included 2 maximums.

Delhi were in desperate need of a wicket, but just couldn't find one and then Dhawan, too, crossed his 50, in the 15th over. But just as Williamson looked set to take the game away from the Daredevils, he was caught by an outstanding effort from Shreyas Iyer off the bowling of Chris Morris. His work, though, was done. He departed for 89 off just 51 balls having given the home side a wonderful platform. Dhawan took over the role of the aggressor and he hit three boundaries of the next two overs to take Hyderabad to 170 off 18 overs.

However, Chris Morris removed Dhawan and Yuvraj off consecutive balls in the penultimate over and gave away only 4 runs, finished with incredible figures of 4/26 in his four overs, to raise DD's hopes. But Deepak Hooda smashed a huge six off Zaheer Khan in the final over before Moises Henriques smashed consecutive boundaries as the Sunrisers finished with 191/4 in their 20 overs.

Samson & Nair take charge of the chase

Sunrisers got off to the best possible start when Mohammed Siraj removed Sam Billings in the second over and put Delhi on the back foot right from the very onset. But with the asking rate climbing, Sanju Samson and Karun Nair decided to take matters into their own hands as they smashed 15 runs off the 5th over to take Delhi to 56/1 at the end of the powerplay.

Over the next few overs, Nair and Samson kept finding the boundaries consistently to keep the Daredevils in the hunt and take Delhi to 80 off 9 overs.

Delhi lose their way

But Nair was sent packing the very next over, run out to a good throw from long-on by the substitute fielder Vijay Shankar, and soon after, in the same over, Rishabh Pant skied an easy catch to Warner off Yuvraj, which left Delhi staring down the barrell at 87/3 at the halfway stage.

From then on, Delhi never really looked in the game as they didn’t manage to keep up with the required run rate. And when Siraj returned to pick Samson’s wicket in the 14th over, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before the defending-champions sealed their win.

Shreyas Iyer finally started playing the big-shots but he it was too little too late for the Delhi Daredevils as they fell short by 15 runs as Sunrisers Hyderabad maintained their unbeaten home run.
