After being dropped from India's tour of West Indies, Rohit Sharma made his return to the ODI team in the first ODI against Sri Lanka. However, it didn't prove to be a happy one from him as a combination of misfortune and carelessness resulted in Sharma taking the long walk back at just 4 runs.

Chasing a meager total of 217 in the ongoing first ODI, India got off to a good start as Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma managed to find the boundaries consistently to take India to 21 for no loss after four overs.

In the fifth over, however, the partnership was broken when, while taking a quick single, Sharma lost his bat and his wicket. The opener dabbed the last ball of Lasith Malinga’s over in front of point and set off in search of a run. While Dhawan responded well to his partner’s call, Sharma was slow off the blocks and kept looking back to see if his partner had made his crease.

Chamara Kapugedera, however, decided to have a shy at the stumps at the non-striker's end. When he realized that he might be short of his crease, Sharma tried to drag his bat across the crease but his willow got stuck in the ground. And though he seemed to have made it with his feet, the direct hit from Kapugedera caught him off guard with his feet in the air and sent him back to the pavilion.
