In the history of cricket, there have been declarations ranging from surprising to controversial, but, today, in Delhi, Virat Kohli was cornered into a declaration by Sri Lanka. With the air-quality index placed at "very unhealthy", Sri Lanka were hesitant in fielding which led to Kohli’s decision.

The Kotla just can’t seem to avoid controversy when Sri Lanka are in town. After the debacle in 2009 when the pitch was deemed to be too dangerous to play on, India’s final Test against Sri Lanka was hampered by the quality of air in the stadium.

While the Sri Lankan players, cue Gamage and Lakmal, appeared to be struggling to catch their breath in the stadium, which led to a huge delay, Kohli used the time to stretch out his legs on the field. It was reminiscent of when, a few months ago, MS Dhoni had taken “a mini nap” due to crowd trouble against the same opponents in Sri Lanka.

However, with the Sri Lankan team management walking onto the field to discuss the issue at hand with the umpires and the visitors having a chat with the officials after every over, Kohli finally lost his cool. Standing on the balcony at the Kotla, Kohli signalled to the Sri Lankan players that he was declaring and in a very annoyed manner implied that his team was ready to bowl.

Had Kohli not been completely frustrated by then, the reaction of the Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, who was seen snickering and applauding the decision, would have done the trick. Eventually, India declared with 536/7 on the board and were rewarded for their call with Dimuth Karunaratne’s wicket on the very first ball of the innings.
