Virat Kohli says its perfect time for him to take a break
Virat Kohli has stated that his break has come at the perfect time, as playing continuously for the last few years has taken a toll on his body. Commending India’s batting and bowling, Kohli expressed his disappointment with the poor fielding that could have seen last game’s result differently.
After Kohli had made a direct scathing attack on the board for being insensitive, while creating schedules, concerning players’ rest, the skipper was given a break from the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka in December. Kohli will again be seen in Indian colours in January next year against South Africa, until which Rohit Sharma will control the reins of the Indian team.
“Last time I took a break, it was very difficult to handle. But my body is wanting it right now. It has taken a toll in the last couple of years, and right now is the perfect time to take a break before South Africa,” said Kohli after the game in Delhi.
Sri Lanka managed a hard-earned draw against India on the last day of the third Test at Feroz Shah Kotla, which saw players like Dhananjaya Silva, Roshen Silva, and Niroshan Dickwella putting in a spirited fight to see off the Indian bowlers, after half of the side had returned to the pavilion. The Indian bowlers could take only two wickets on the last day which were shared equally by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
Kohli, however, believes that India’s three dropped catches behind the stumps during the first innings that led to Sri Lanka cutting down the lead to just 163 runs, could have been avoided and the side could have pushed harder for a win in the last game.
“Feels like a disappointment. They played really well. The pitch got really tired by the end. In hindsight, if we had grabbed our chances, we could have pushed harder. Slip catching and fielding, still need to work on it. Firstly, from his (Rahane) initial days, he’s always fielded at gully. Gully is a very difficult position to field at. So, we trust him there with his reflexes,” Kohli said.
If there was one man, who created ripples in the recently concluded series, it was Virat Kohli. From becoming the fifth Indian to reach 5000 runs in Tests, to becoming the first skipper to score eleven centuries in a calendar year, to getting his career-best 243-run knock - Kohli has created and broken numerous records in the last three weeks.
“It was a good series for me personally. I was hitting the ball pretty well. It was a revelation for me as well that I can play the same way in Tests as I do in ODIs, pushing the game forward. When I wasn’t captain, it was very difficult for me to think of the situation,” said Kohli.
