Committee of Administrators unhappy with CAC’s decision to pick batting, bowling consultants
The Committee of Administrators is not happy at Cricket Advisory Committee’s decision to choose a support staff in addition to selecting the coach for the National team. The decision to rope in Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid for the senior team will be reviewed in the committee meeting on Saturday.
Although the CAC comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman, were only supposed to pick the head coach for the Indian team, they also recommended the names of former India pacer Zaheer Khan as the bowling consultant and former batting legend Rahul Dravid's name as overseas batting consultant with the senior national team. But as it appears, the decision hasn't gone well with the Committee of Administrators (CoA), who think that it should be the call of the newly appointed coach.
“We are going to be looking at this very seriously. They have clearly gone beyond the brief,” an unnamed CoA member was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
When the CoA had advised the BCCI to send out a statement on May 25 inviting applications for the role of the national coach, they had briefed the CAC and the BCCI to just pick India's national coach. No mandate was given to the CAC to select bowling and batting consultants but to everyone’s utter surprise, the latter went ahead and picked Zaheer and Dravid for these roles.
"To be honest, I really don't know what they (CAC) have been up to. We have to get into the details of what CAC has done because this is clearly not acceptable," the CoA member added.
While questioned on the same, Shastri, though, preferred not to comment and said that he would try and discuss this with the right authorities. "Considering I have to work with the team for more than 200 days a year, isn't it more intelligent if I have a say in it? I thought that's how it works," Shastri said.
Last year, when Shastri also conveyed to the board while applying for the post of head coach that if selected, he wanted six of his formers assistants - batting coach Sanjay Bangar, bowling coach Bharat Arun, fielding coach R Sridhar, physiologist Patrick Farhart, trainer Sankar Basu, and team assistant Raghu - retained. Shastri told the board in 2016 that the support team had gelled very well with him and the team over a period of 18 months that saw India reaching the 2015 World Cup semi-finals and becoming the number one Test team.
