Virender Sehwag suggested that whoever replaces Anil Kumble as the new Indian coach, he will have a hard time competing with his almost spotless record. The former Indian batsman also added that it would be better for the team if the newly vacated post is filled by an Indian coach.

Anil Kumble coached the Indian side to successive victories against New Zealand, Bangladesh, Australia, and West Indies, with India's only series loss coming against the Caribbean team in a two-match T20 series. Under the former leg-spinner, the team rose to the number one ranking in Tests and also made it to their second consecutive Champions Trophy final.

However, due to a rift between Kumble and Kohli, the former decided to step down from the post suggesting their relationship had become 'untenable'.

The prospects for the next coach include former Indian opener Virender Sehwag, Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody, two-time Pakistan coach Richard Pybus, and Indian batting legend Lalchand Rajput. Sehwag has been termed as the favourite to be handed a contract by the BCCI who have now invited fresh applications for the post.

The former Indian opener, however, feels it would not be an easy task succeeding Kumble owing to his dazzling record. “His achievements as a coach will be hard to replicate. I can’t comment on his coaching style but as a senior, as a player there is no one better than him,” Sehwag told UC News.

“I have never played under Kumble – the coach. However, he has been my senior, my captain. In fact my comeback in international cricket was under him. The Indian team’s performance under him has been phenomenal. Whoever comes in as his successor will find it hard to fill in his shoes.” Sehwag added.

The 38-year old then stated that he would prefer to see an Indian appointed as the head coach as it would be better for the team.

“There is not much difference between an Indian coach and a foreign coach. I think an Indian coach can communicate in a better way. Sometimes, it often happens that a person is more comfortable in expressing his opinion in Hindi and not in English. That way you gain the confidence of the players,” Sehwag said. “With Indian coaches you can also joke around.”

Earlier, when questioned regarding the rumours of him sending a two-line CV for the post of the Indian coach Sehwag wittily replied, "If I had to send a small CV, my name would have been enough. I want to know the source of these stories so that I can also ask that person about how he got the information."
