At 38, Ashish Nehra was surely not the most athletic of fielders in Indian shirt on Wednesday at Feroz Shah Kotla. Yet, the retiring bowler drew out a huge cheer from the crowd with a sublime piece of field work as he kicked the ball up to pick it with his hand, which even left Virat Kohli in awe.

Despite being the man of the moment on Wednesday with the crowd cheering every movement of Ashish Nehra, who was bowing out of the game after eighteen long years, the lanky fast bowler exhibited to the audience a real piece of his showmanship.

It was in the 16 over just after Tom Latham’s dismissal. Tim Southee had missed a Yuzvendra Chahal delivery as it ran away after hitting his pads to the fine leg for a simple single. Nehra was behind the keeper covering the region and instead of bending to pick the rolling ball up, he allowed to bounce it off with his right foot and into his hands. He then threw it back to the keeper in one smooth motion.

Virat Kohli, who was busy in the second innings encouraging the crowd to cheer for the outgoing bowler, was pleasantly surprised by his skills and his eyes expressed in awe of it. The other Indian players were all smiles too and applauded Nehra for his fancy footwork.

An aging body isn’t prone to too much bending and maybe Nehra has mastered such skills to get his trade going smoothly with as little effort as possible. However, after spending eighteen years on the cricket field, those are expected to be bread and butter stuff for Nehra now.
